Abstract

Laterite steel is an alternative solution obtained from the purification and casting of nickel pig iron through various processes at LIPI so that the composition of its composition changes. One of the most widely used metal strengthening methods is the heat treatment process. In this research, the heat treatment process for low carbon steel based on laterite steel with the aim to find out the improvement of mechanical properties and microstructure of laterite steel as a result of the heat treatment process. This method begins with heating the steel at an austenization temperature of 8000C, 9000C, 10000C for 90 minutes and then cooled with air, oil and water cooling media. After that it is reheated at a tempering temperature of 1000C, 2000C, 3000C for 15 minutes. The results showed that the austenisation temperature, cooling media, and temperature of temperation affect the mechanical properties and microstructure of laterite steel. At the austenisation temperature of 9000C the air conditioning medium without tempering obtained tensile strength values of σUTS of 470 MPa and σYS of 456 MPa. At austenization temperature of 10000C the water cooling media without tempering obtained a hardness value of 126.58 HRB. At the austenisation temperature of 10000C the air conditioning medium with 2000C tempering obtained a toughness value of 0.7375 J / mm2. Phase changes that occur from the initial sample that is ferrite-pearlite phase changes depending on the cooling media. In cooling through the air, the phase will remain ferrite-pearlite with a percentage of 62.94% so as to produce high strength and toughness. Whereas in cooling through oil and water, the phase will change to martensite with a percentage of 65.257% and 65.769%. The level of violence through the cooling water medium is higher than oil. This is caused by differences in cooling speed by each cooling media.
