Abstract

The increase in activities at the Kalimantan Institute of Technology (ITK) has contributed to a rise in waste generation, particularly cardboard packaging waste from consumption. This waste has not been widely processed and is directly disposed of in landfills, leading to environmental issues, despite its potential to be reused. This study aims to utilize cardboard waste as an alternative replacement for fine aggregate in the production of paving blocks to help reduce waste and support sustainable development. The objective of the research is to determine the compressive strength and water absorption of paving blocks in accordance with quality standard D (compressive strength of 8.5–10 MPa and maximum water absorption of 10%). The experimental method includes literature review, preparation of tools and materials, material identification, sample production, and testing of compressive strength and water absorption. The cardboard waste was shredded to a size of 4.75 mm and then mixed with sand, cement, and water in varying substitution ratios (from control to 7.5%). All variations were tested after a 28-day curing period. cardboard substitution achieved the highest compressive strength at 8.87 MPa, while a 7.5% substitution produced the lowest value at 3.00 MPa. On average, all samples did not meet the D quality standard. Water absorption increased with higher waste content but significantly exceeded the maximum threshold of 10%
