Abstract
The increase in the number of motor vehicles in Indonesia has led to a surge in waste tires, posing a serious threat to the environment. These waste tires are often poorly managed, causing air, soil, and water pollution, and serving as breeding grounds for pest animals disease-carrying rats. One potential solution is utilizing waste tires as a substitute for fine aggregates in the production of paving blocks. This study aims to evaluate the compressive strength and water absorption of paving blocks made with tire waste mixtures, adhering to Class B quality standards as specified in SNI 03-0691-1996. The research methodology includes shredding waste tires, designing mix compositions with 5%, 7,5%, and 10% subtitution rates , and producing test specimens measuring 20 cm x 10 cm x 6.5 cm. The test specimens undergo a curing process for 28 days before testing. Testing involves evaluating compressive strength and water absorption to assess the quality of the paving blocks. Paving blocks with tire waste substitution can meet Class B quality requirements, achieving compressive strength between 17-20 MPa and a maximum water absorption rate of 6%, making them suitable for parking areas. The research results show that paving blocks with a 5% tire waste substitution produced the highest compressive strength of 20 MPa, while the 10% substitution yielded the lowest value of 17 MPa. None of the samples met the requirements of Quality Standard B.. Water absorption tended to increase with the amount of waste added, but remained below the maximum threshold of 6%. This proves that used tire waste can be effectively utilized as a substitute for fine aggregate in the production of paving blocks for parking areas. Besides meeting technical standards, this approach also supports sustainable management of inorganic waste.
