Abstract

The use of synthetic pesticides such as Sidametrin 50 EC on mustard greens, while effective in controlling pests, poses a risk of leaving harmful residues on the leaf surface. Washing vegetables with water is generally considered ineffective due to the chemical properties of pesticides, which are difficult to dissolve in water. This study examined the effectiveness of Plasma Activated Water (PAW) by applying varying exposure times of 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds, 90 seconds, and 120 seconds, as a non-thermal alternative method to reduce Sidametrin 50 EC residue levels on mustard green leaves, and to observe the effect of PAW on water pH, providing a foundation for developing environmentally friendly technology. Mustard green leaves contaminated with Sidametrin 50 EC were treated with plasma for 10, 30, 60, 90, and 120 seconds. The concentration of pesticide residue in Beaker A (before PAW treatment) and Beaker B (after PAW treatment) was measured and analyzed for differences in average pesticide residue reduction using one-way ANOVA. The one-way ANOVA resulted (F count < F table) at a 5% significance level indicate that the null hypothesis wish accepted. Therefore, there where no significant difference in the average reduction of TDS concentration among the different PAW treatment time groups, for both mustard green leaf samples and HVS paper as a data comparison. This might be due to the fact that during the soaking of mustard greens in Beaker A during the PAW process, most of the residue was already successfully degraded, resulting in less and more uniform residue remaining in Beaker B. A pH reduction of 0.62 was observed after 120 seconds of PAW exposure, indicating that the PAW-treated water remains safe.
