Abstract
Climate change is a significant global challenge, especially for vulnerable coastal areas such as Balikpapan City, East Kalimantan. This area faces various risks such as sea level rise, changes in rainfall patterns, and potential environmental disasters. This final project aims to design a Research and Technology Center that supports climate resilience and low-carbon development with a HighTech Architecture approach. This approach emphasizes the use of advanced technology, environmentally friendly materials, and exposure of structural elements in its architectural design. This center is designed as a primary facility for the development of local adaptation strategies, climate change mitigation research, development of carbon emission reduction technologies, sustainable natural resource management systems, and low-carbon development models for industrial and urban areas. The design process is carried out through site analysis, literature studies, precedent studies, to the development of innovative, functional, and sustainable design concepts and forms. This Research and Technology Center is designed to be a center of excellence in sustainable technology research and development. As part of the design validation, a building performance simulation was carried out using the EDGE application to measure energy efficiency, water use, and carbon emission reduction. The simulation results show that the HighTech Architecture approach can support the achievement of efficiency and sustainability targets in buildings. This approach is not just an architectural style, but rather a design philosophy that is adaptive to climate challenges, and supports the mission of low-carbon development and climate resilience in Balikpapan City.
