Abstract

Manggar Beach in Balikpapan holds significant potential for utilizing sea wave energy as a renewable energy source, yet it remains largely untapped. This study aims to design and develop a pico hydro power generation system (PLTPh) based on the Single Point Absorber Oscillating Water Column (SPA-OWC) method. The system utilizes the oscillation of sea waves to generate bidirectional airflow, which drives a Wells turbine connected to a 12V DC generator to produce electricity. The system is equipped with an Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring setup using an ESP32 microcontroller and the Blynk platform to monitor voltage, current, power, and RPM in real time. The system was tested initially over three days and extended to seven days of observation. The maximum recorded output reached 9.52 Volts, 0.23 Amperes, and 2.24 Watts. On average, the system produced 1.85 Watts of power with an overall energy conversion efficiency of 62.32%, peaking at 87.5%. These results indicate that the PLTPh system with the OWC approach performs effectively and has promising potential to be developed further as a small-scale renewable energy solution, particularly for coastal communities.
