Abstract

The advancement of electric vehicles requires a battery charging system that is efficient, stable, and safe. Lithium-ion batteries offer high energy density and efficiency but are sensitive to current and voltage variations during charging. Imbalances in these parameters can reduce efficiency and accelerate cell degradation. This study aims to analyze the effect of chatging current on the lithium-ion battery charging process and its impact on DC motor performance with current control using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). The research was conducted through a series of simulations using MATLAB/Simulink, consisting of five stages : (1) soft-switch pre-charging circuit to analyze inrush current, (2) rectifier circuit for AC-to-DC conversion, (3) filter circuit to reduce voltage ripple, (4) full charging circuit without motor to examine voltage stability and charging efficiency, (5) full charging circuit integrated with a DC motor and PWM control to observe the influence of charging current on motor torque and speed. Simulation results indicate that the LC filter effectively reduced voltage ripple to ±0.5 V, while PWM control provided smoother current regulation and improved motor performance with a torque increase of about 12% at 25-50% SoC. This research is expected to serve as a reference for developing integrated lithium-ion battery charging systems with active current control for higher efficiency and safety in electric vehicle applications. Keyword: Battery charging, DC motor, energy efficiency, lithium—ion battery, PWM, State of Charge (SoC) variation.
