Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in the number of copper wires on the compressive strength and defects of aluminum product castings made using the sand casting method. The casting process with the sand molding method is one of the manufacturing techniques commonly used in the metal industry, but it often faces product quality problems, such as casting defects and suboptimal mechanical properties in the product. In this study, variations in the number of copper wires were used as reinforcing elements to improve the mechanical properties of cast aluminum. Specimen samples were made using variations in the number of copper wires, namely 0 copper wire, 1 copper wire, 2 copper wire, 3 copper wires and 4 copper wires. The method used is an experimental method and obtained the highest strength test results of 266.78 MPa and the lowest of 260.27 MPa, as well as the lowest shrinkage defect results of 3.2% with a density of 2.64 kg/cm³ and the highest shrinkage value of 6.5% with a density of 2.55 kg/cm³. From the results of the two tests, there is a difference in density, where the higher the density, the denser a specimen is, this can affect the mechanical properties of a material.
