Abstract
Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) are widely used in industrial applications due to their high efficiency, fast dynamic response, and high torque-to-inertia ratio; however, they still face a major issue in the form of torque ripple, which can cause vibration, noise, and accelerated mechanical wear, particularly under speed variations and load changes. This study aims to design and analyze the performance of Sliding Mode Control (SMC) to reduce torque ripple in a PMSM using Field-Oriented Control (FOC) in the d–q coordinate framework. The methodology includes a literature review, mathematical modeling of the PMSM, control system design, and simulation using MATLAB/Simulink with key components such as a Voltage Source Inverter (VSI), Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM), and Clarke–Park transformations applied to a 1.5 kW surface-mounted PMSM. The system is tested under no-load speed variations from 1000 to 2500 RPM and load variations from 1 to 4 Nm at 2500 RPM, focusing on torque ripple and speed stability. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed SMC successfully maintains torque ripple below the target limit of 15% across all test scenarios.
