Abstract

The rapid growth of industrialization and urbanization has increased the use of generator sets as alternative power sources in industrial and office areas, including in Balikpapan. The operation of generator sets at PT X produced a noise level of 89.9 dBA in 2025, exceeding the safe threshold limit of 85 dBA as regulated by the Minister of Manpower Regulation No. 5 of 2018, thereby posing a potential risk of hearing impairment due to continuous noise exposure. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of local waste materials, namely bamboo fiber, cassava peel, and sawdust, as acoustic panels in reducing noise using the Response Surface Method (RSM) and Design Expert software. The findings revealed that bamboo fiber demonstrated the best acoustic performance, with a maximum noise reduction of 11.45 dB at a thickness of 2 cm within 60 seconds. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis indicated that bamboo has a more open and well-structured pore arrangement, making it more effective in absorbing sound waves. RSM optimization showed that the optimal thickness was 2 cm, achieving a noise reduction of 12 dB using bamboo material. The generator set enclosure design developed using SketchUp also met technical standards as well as Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
