Abstract

Balikpapan, despite its rapid development in various sectors, faces limitations in arts facilities, especially the Balikpapan Cultural Center, which has not been optimally utilized. The Cultural Center is more frequently used for commercial events, shifting its primary function as a space for artistic appreciation. This limitation hinders the development and expression of arts in the city. To address this issue, the design of an Arts Center in the Cultural Center area utilizes an adaptive architectural approach. This approach allows for the creation of flexible, efficient art spaces that can adapt to dynamic needs, supporting the growth of the arts in Balikpapan. The aim of this design is to create an Arts Center that optimally accommodates artistic activities and applies the principles of adaptive architecture to ensure the design can adjust to the surrounding context and user needs. The research questions raised are how to design an Arts Center that optimally accommodates artistic activities and how to apply adaptive architecture to support the functionality of spaces that adapt to the surrounding environment and user needs. The method used is a systematic design approach that involves analysis, synthesis, and evaluation to produce designs that are relevant, contextual, and sustainable. This approach ensures that each stage of the design process aligns with functional, aesthetic, and technical aspects.
