Abstract

The design of the zoo in Balikpapan City aims to serve multiple functions, including recreation, education, wildlife conservation, and the implementation of sustainable architectural principles. With the development of Indonesia's New Capital City (IKN) in East Kalimantan, many wildlife species, particularly orangutans, have been affected by the loss of their natural habitats. This condition has increased human–wildlife conflicts within and around the IKN development area. Therefore, the proposed zoo is intended to function as both a wildlife conservation center and a major tourism destination in Balikpapan. From an architectural perspective, the zoo adopts a biophilic design approach that emphasizes harmony between wildlife, visitors, and the surrounding environment. The application of biophilic design principles includes the use of renewable energy, efficient water management systems, and spatial designs that closely resemble the natural habitats of the animals. Furthermore, the zoo is expected to serve as an educational facility that promotes public awareness of wildlife and environmental conservation while contributing to the development of tourism and the local economy.
