Abstract

Pico Hydropower Plants (PLTPH) are one of the solutions for utilizing renewable energy in areas with low-head water flow potential. The Archimedes Screw turbine is a suitable alternative because it can operate under relatively low flow rate and head conditions. This study aims to analyze the effect of pitch variation in single-screw and double-screw Archimedes Screw turbines on rotational speed, mechanical power, and turbine efficiency. The research was conducted through the stages of design, fabrication, and testing of a turbine prototype based on the river flow conditions in Batu Kajang Village, East Kalimantan, with a flow rate of 0.015 m³/s, a head of 0.9 m, and a turbine inclination angle of 30°. The pitch variations used for the single-screw turbine were 12.55 cm, 18.25 cm, and 21.7 cm, while those for the double-screw turbine were 25.1 cm, 36.5 cm, and 43.4 cm. Testing was carried out using a tachometer to measure rotational speed and a Prony brake combined with a spring balance to determine torque, from which mechanical power and turbine efficiency were calculated.The results showed that pitch variation significantly affected the performance of the Archimedes Screw turbine. In the single-screw configuration, increasing the pitch from 12.55 cm to 21.7 cm increased the maximum mechanical power from 38.84 W to 67.38 W and the maximum efficiency from 29.41% to 51.03%. In the double-screw configuration, the maximum mechanical power increased from 56.56 W at a pitch of 25.1 cm to 86.06 W at a pitch of 36.5 cm, with a maximum efficiency of 65.18%, before decreasing to 64.58 W and 48.91% efficiency at a pitch of 43.4 cm. These results indicate that increasing the pitch does not always improve turbine performance, as there is an optimum pitch condition influenced by the available water flow rate. The best performance was achieved by the double-screw turbine with a pitch of 36.5 cm, which produced a maximum mechanical power of 86.06 W, a maximum efficiency of 65.18%, a torque of 6.867 Nm, and a rotational speed of 119.75 RPM. Therefore, the combination of a double-screw configuration and a 36.5 cm pitch is the most effective configuration for utilizing water energy under a flow rate of 0.015 m³/s and a head of 0.9 m.
