Abstract

The manufacturing process cannot be separated from machining activities, one of which is the turning process. In operating a lathe, it can produce quality products, one of which is the processing of raw materials in the form of metal. Of the various uses of metal, ST 41 steel is widely used for the use of bridge construction materials, screw chains, axles in a vehicle. One of the parameters that affect the roughness of the lathe process is the spindle speed. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of varying spindle rotation on the cutting temperature of the tool, tool wear, and surface roughness of ST 41 steel. This research method is experimental, because to find the impact of spindle rotation on cutting temperature on the tool, tool wear and tear. and the surface roughness of objects by collecting data at 9 points. The turning process in this study was carried out at the Integrated Laboratory of the Kalimantan Institute of Technology, Balikpapan and for roughness measurements at PT. Mulia Perdana Mupeco, Balikpapan. Parameters or independent variations in this study were the spindle speed at the low level , namely, 130 rpm and 300 rpm and at the high level , namely, 1225 rpm and 2000 rpm. Based on this research, it is known that the rotation of the spindle speed can affect the cutting temperature of the tool, tool wear, and surface roughness of the object. Based on the research that has been done, the highest average value is obtained at high level rotation with a spindle speed of 2000 rpm, the average value is obtained at a temperature of 62.8 C, tool wear is 0.162 grams with an MRR of 1657.92 mm3/minute but the roughness value is low, which is 2,901 μm. And for the average value, the lowest value is obtained at low level rotation with a spindle speed of 190 rpm namely, at a temperature of 53.6˚C, tool wear is 0.01833 grams with an MRR of 156.13 mm3/minute, but the roughness value is high, namely 4.243 μm.
