Abstract

Institut Teknologi Kalimantan (ITK) is a higher education institution located in Balikpapan City. ITK generates hazardous and toxic waste from laboratory and operational activities, including the used chemicals, solvents, reagents, electronic equipment, and other hazardous materials that have adverse impact on human health and environment. According to Indonesian Government Regulation 22/2021, hazardous waste producers are required to provide a temporary storage facility for hazardous waste. Therefore, this study aims to design a temporary storage facility for hazardous waste in ITK campus that complies with the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry 6/2021. The design process includes the identification of types of hazardous waste generated, evaluation of existing waste management conditions, and the development of temporary storage facility design scenarios based on location, type of packaging, and storage area. Additionally, the planning process utilizes software such as AutoCAD and SketchUp, while the selection of design alternatives is supported by the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. Waste identification results show the annual generation of acidic waste (865 L), basic waste (810 L), liquid organic waste (390 L), mixed waste (380 L), liquid inorganic waste (330 L), lamp waste (218.8 L), glass waste (10 L), and battery waste (6.164 L). Evaluation of existing hazardous waste management practices indicates a compliance level of 49.48%, categorized as "fair." Based on the AHP method, the optimal alternative is scenario 1, which proposes a temporary storage facility with an area of 28 m² (7 m × 4 m), using 20-liter jerrycans for liquid waste and 50-liter plastic drums for solid waste. The recommended temporary storage facility hazardous waste location is between the Integrated Laboratories I and II.
