Abstract
Heat transfer is a phenomenon where thermal energy moves from one region to another due to a significant temperature difference between the two regions in an effort to reach thermal equilibrium. The use of insulation materials such as polyurethane foam and polyethylene plays a crucial role, as their low thermal conductivity values can effectively inhibit the heat flow rate on the insulation walls of fish boxes. This study employs a numerical approach based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) using OpenFOAM software, where simulations were conducted on four variations of insulation thickness. The configurations were 0.05 (PU) and 0.005 (PE), 0.07 (PU) and 0.005 (PE), 0.05 (PU) and 0.007 (PE), and 0.07 (PU) and 0.007 (PE) respectively for Variations 1 through 4, measured in meters with an observation period of 60 seconds of simulation time. The simulation results indicate that Variation 4 provides the most optimal performance, where at the 60th second, the resulting total heat rate reached the lowest value of 0.3338 J/s, followed by Variation 2 at 0.3343 J/s, Variation 3 at 0.3708 J/s, and lastly Variation 1 at 0.3714 J/s. The conclusion of this research emphasizes that an appropriate increase in insulation thickness significantly influences the efficiency of cooling systems; therefore, it is recommended for the fishing vessel industry to implement optimal thickness standards to minimize energy loss during sea operations.
