Abstract
Head loss is the energy loss that occurs in fluid flow due to friction between the fluid and the pipe wall, as well as the presence of piping components such as elbows, enlargements, contractions, and venturi meters. Understanding this phenomenon is crucial in the study of fluid mechanics because it affects the performance of piping systems. This study aims to design and construct a head loss demonstration apparatus that aligns with the principles of fluid flow in pipes and to analyze the effect of flow rate on flow velocity and the head loss values occurring in the system. The research method included the design, construction, and testing of the experimental apparatus. Testing was conducted with flow rates of 10, 11, 12, and 13 L/min. The data collected included flow velocity in pipes with diameters of 28 mm and 38 mm, as well as head loss values for several piping components. The test results showed that an increase in flow rate caused an increase in flow velocity in both pipe sizes. The flow velocity in the Ø28 mm pipe increased from 0.271 m/s to 0.352 m/s, while in the Ø38 mm pipe it increased from 0.147 m/s to 0.191 m/s. As flow velocity increased, the head loss values across all components also increased. The highest head loss values occurred in the venturi meter, ranging from 0.060 m to 0.085 m. Based on the research results, the teaching aid that was designed and constructed functioned well and was able to demonstrate the relationship between flow rate, flow velocity, and head loss in accordance with fluid mechanics theory. This apparatus can be used as a teaching aid to help students understand the characteristics of fluid flow and energy loss in piping systems more effectively.
