Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effect of welding current variation in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) spot welding on the mechanical properties and microstructure of SS400 steel. The welding currents applied were 30 A, 40 A, and 50 A using an E6013 electrode on lap joint specimens. The lap shear test indicated that the 30 A condition produced both interfacial and pullout failure modes, with a maximum load of 5.22 kN and a shear strength of 295.45 MPa. Increasing the current to 40 A and 50 A resulted in deeper weld penetration and larger nugget diameters, ranging from 5.66 to 5.71 mm. Under these conditions, pull-out failure became the dominant fracture mode, while the shear strength decreased slightly to 280.23 MPa and 279.83 MPa, respectively. Microstructural observations of the Weld Metal revealed that welding current significantly influenced phase formation. The specimen welded at 40 A exhibited the highest proportions of acicular ferrite (49%) and ferrite (22%), whereas the 30 A specimen contained the highest pearlite fraction (48%). These findings demonstrate that variations in welding current alter the heat input during the welding process, leading to changes in phase transformation and the resulting mechanical performance of the welded joints.
