Abstract

The increasing demand for road construction has driven various efforts to improve the quality of road pavements, one of which is through the use of asphalt mixtures with additional materials with superior characteristics. One alternative material being studied is sulfur, which is insoluble in water and can improve the stability and flow of asphalt mixtures based on the Marshall test. This study aims to determine the optimum asphalt content (OAC), the optimum sulfur content, and to analyze the effect of sulfur and white lime filler additions on the characteristics of the Asphalt Concrete–Binder Course (AC-BC) mixture. The method used was the Marshall method based on the 2018 General Specifications for Highways, Revision 2. The sulfur content variations used were 3%, 6%, and 9%, with white lime filler variations of 1% and 2%. The results showed that the optimum asphalt content was 5.46%, with a stability value of 1,089 kg, flow of 2.66 mm, VIM of 3.22%, VMA of 14.89%, VFA of 78.34%, MQ of 408.47 kg/mm, and density of 2.26 g/cm³. Furthermore, the optimum sulfur content was obtained at 3% for both filler variations because all Marshall parameters met Highways specifications. With a 1% white lime filler, a 3% sulfur content resulted in a stability of 1,151.17 kg, a flow of 3.55 mm, a VIM of 3.98%, a VMA of 15.56%, a VFA of 74.37%, a MQ of 324.27 kg/mm, and a density of 2.24 g/cm³. Meanwhile, with a 2% white lime filler, the stability values were 1,122.23 kg, a flow of 3.30 mm, a VIM of 4.95%, a VMA of 16.56%, a VFA of 70.37%, a MQ of 340.07 kg/mm³, and a density of 2.26 g/cm³. The addition of 6% and 9% sulfur decreased the stability and Marshall Quotient values, as well as increased flow, resulting in some parameters not meeting specifications. Based on these results, the use of 3% sulfur with 1% or 2% white lime filler can be recommended as an alternative additive in AC-BC mixtures because it meets Marshall requirements and has the potential to support more sustainable use of volcanic waste.
